Tips for cooking Elk meat.

Elk meat is a lean, flavorful, and nutrient-rich protein source.

It can be used in a variety of dishes. Here are some tips for cooking elk meat:

  1. Resting: Elk meat is naturally lean and is best cooked to medium-rare or medium doneness. Cooking a steak further than medium can cause an elk steak to dry out and be less enjoyable to eat. For best results remove your steak from the heat at medium rare, and wrap it in foil to rest for approximately 8 minutes.  A few minutes resting the meat will allow the juices to redistribute and stay moist. Keep in mind that the steak will continue to cook slightly while resting.
  2. Slow roasting: Elk cuts such as roasts work well using low and slow methods like braising, slow-roasting, or crockpot.
  3. Seasonings: Elk meat has a distinct flavor that pairs well with a variety of those same spices used on other red meats.  Enjoy experimenting with your favorite spices and herbs.
